What area of BC does kootenay.jobs cover?

Kootenay.jobs primarily covers the Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, Slocan Valley, Kaslo area but jobs from other areas of the Kootenays may also be posted.

How often are new jobs posted on kootenay.jobs?

New jobs are posted on kootenay.jobs by employers in our area every day!  If you are actively seeking work, it is best to check the site each day for new jobs.  Jobs are listed in chronological order on our job board (newest jobs are viewed first at the top of the list).  If you have a profile on our site, you can also set up job alerts to alert you when a specific type of job has been posted.

Can I apply for a job without creating a profile / signing in and how?

Yes you can apply for a job without creating a profile on kootenay.jobs.  From the Find a Job tab at the top of the screen, select search all jobs to bring up a list of all active job postings on kootenay.jobs.  If you find a job you would like to apply for, read the job ad carefully so you know how the employer would like you to apply.  If no alternate instructions are given, click the Apply For Job button and fill in the required fields (name, email address, message) and upload your resume for the employer to review.  Your application will be sent to the employer via email.

What are the benefits of creating a profile on kootenay.jobs?

The benefits of creating a job seeker profile on kootenay.jobs are as follows:

  • You can upload as many different resumes as you would like, that are tailored for different types of jobs.  This makes applying for jobs on short notice much easier as all of your information is ready to go!
  • You can also give employers permission to find you by searching for your resume.  When you upload a resume, the default is that it can be searched by employers.  If you do not wish for your resume to be searched by employers, from the Job Seeker tab at the top of the screen, select Job Seeker Dashboard and under My Resumes, click the Hide button to the right of your resume.  You can go back at click Publish at any later date if you would like your resume to be searchable.
How do I apply for a job through kootenay.jobs if I have a profile?

Once you are signed in to your kootenay.jobs profile and have found a job you would like to apply to, read the job ad thoroughly so you understand how the employer would like you to apply.  Note that the ‘Apply For Job” button will appear on all jobs even if the employer has specified an alternate way to apply in the job posting.  If the employer has not indicated an alternate way to apply (for example, in person or by phone), click on the Apply For Job button.  Your name and email address will be automatically populated.  Use the Message area as your cover letter, and select one of your online resumes (one that you have saved in your profile) or upload a different resume using the Browse option.  When you are finished, click the Send Application button and the employer will receive your application via email.  You will also receive a confirmation email that you have successfully applied for the job.

I forgot my password, how do I reset it?

If you have forgotten your password, click on the Log In button at the top of your screen and click on the Lost Password link.  You will be asked for your Username or Email Address and be emailed a link to generate a new password.  If this does not work for some reason, give us a call at 250.352.6200 ext 221 and we can help you reset your password.

How is an employer notified if I apply for a job through kootenay.jobs?

If you apply for a job through kootenay.jobs, the employer is notified by email of your application.  You will also receive an email confirming that your application has been sent.

How do I change my password?

To change your password you must be signed in to your account on kootenay.jobs.  On the black bar at the top of the screen on the right hand side, you will see a message that says ‘Howdy, your username’. Hover over that message and click on Edit My Profile.  From here, you will be directed to login with your password one more time and then taken to your Profile screen.  Scroll down until you see Account Management and click on the Generate Password button.  An automatically generated password will appear and you can type over this with any password you like.  Make sure you have checked the box that says ‘Confirm use of weak password’ if the site has determined your password is not strong enough and click on the Update Profile button at the bottom of the screen.  We suggest you use symbols and numbers within your password to create a strong password.

If I upload my resume to kootenay.jobs as a part of my profile, can employers view it?

Yes, they can!  When you upload a resume, the default setting is that it can be searched by employers.  If you do not wish for your resume to be searched by employers, from the Job Seeker tab at the top of the scree, select Job Seeker Dashboard  and under My Resumes, click the Hide button to the right of your resume.  You can go back at click Publish at any later date if you would like your resume to be searchable.

Where can I find the job board, and how can I search for specific types of jobs?

From the kootenay.jobs homepage, click on Find A Job and then Search All Jobs.  This will pull up the list of all active job postings on the site.  If you would like to narrow your search, from the Search All Job Postings screen you can enter a keyword, region, category (or all three) and also select if you are looking for a full time / part time / casual etc. position.  From the Find A Job menu there are also options to search by employer or category.

I got an error message when trying to apply for a job through the website, what should I do?

Try switching internet browsers if possible (for example, from Explorer to Fire Fox or Chrome).  If you are still getting this error, give us a call.  At the very least we can give you the employers contact information so you can contact them directly with your application.  We may ask you what the circumstances around the error were so we can troubleshoot the problem.  Thank you for your understanding in advance if this happens!

Do you have any other job search or job application tips regarding Kootenay.jobs?

When applying for a job, remember that you are making your first impression with the employer.  Make sure you pay attention to the details of the job postings and follow them – for example how and when the employer would like you to apply for the position.  If you follow the employers instructions right from the application process, it shows them that you pay attention to details as a potential employee!  We recommend tailoring your resume and cover letter for each job you are applying for, and we are happy to help you with this at our Self Serve Centers in Nelson and Castlegar.  Please come in and see us or give us a call for more tips or information!
